Lowering Cholesterol Levels

Sep 18, 2007 Author: staffwriter | Filed under: Health

Eating more fiber-rich foods may help to lower your blood cholesterol level. A certain type of dietary fiber, called soluble fiber, may help lower cholesterol levels by sweeping cholesterol out of the body before it gets into the bloodstream. Soluble fiber lowers the “bad” Low Density Lipoprotein or LDL cholesterol without lowering the “good” High Density Lipoprotein or HDL cholesterol.

Foods rich in soluble fiber include oat bran, legumes, dried beans and peas, many fruits and vegetables such as apples, pears, oranges, carrots, and psyllium seeds, broccoli, brown rice, and whole grain breads.

Some Beneficial Properties of Green

Sep 18, 2007 Author: staffwriter | Filed under: Health

Asian cultures have used green tea for medicinal purposes throughout the course of time. Recent scientific studies, though, have shown many different benefits associated with green tea. Green tea is rich in powerful antioxidants. While green, oolong, and black tea all come from the same plant, the Camellia green tea is processed differently than the other teas. The leaves are steamed. Therefore, the compound that is so helpful isn’t oxidized as it is in the other teas. The only harmful effect noticed with green tea is the same kind of effect noticed with other caffeine drinks. Green tea, though, has considerably less caffeine than coffee.

Green tea offers at least ten health benefits. One health benefit green tea offers is a lowering of cholesterol because green tea has a high concentration of antioxidants. Green Tea will help your body increase your liver’s LDL receptors. This helps reduce bad cholesterol in the blood, thereby lowering your total cholesterol levels. Green tea has also been known to help remission in cancer patients. Green tea inhibits the enzyme which can help cancer cells spread throughout the body. It can help decrease tumor sizes and help prevent further tumor formation.

Hair, spider veins, blemishes, fine lines, wrinkles, and many other skin surface irregularities can be improved with laser technology. Even a certain degree of skin tightening can be achieved.

Not so many years ago, when someone wanted to look better, her only choice was surgery. Today, the greatest change has been the introduction of cosmetic lasers. These lasers are non-ablative (do not destroy tissue) with essentially no down time. Thus, we are in the era of “Beauty and the Beam.”
There are many types of lasers and each one of them is different due to the wavelength of the electromagnetic spectrum that the laser uses. The laser can only be one specific wavelength.

For a friendly, fluffy, backyard pet, some families are choosing chickens. Besides their eggs and aesthetics, chickens are natural gardeners-great at pulling weeds and generating organic fertilizer.

Chicks are surprisingly easy to tame. They learn best through positive reinforcements and food rewards.

Growing chickens can be tamed by feeding them special treats by hand, and by being with them for at least ten minutes daily when they are young As long as they are handled gently and treated well, they make perfectly acceptable pets that often follow their caregiver, and will even sit in a lap or perch on a shoulder. Older birds can be tamed considerably by hand-feeding leftover table scraps but grown chickens are generally a challenge far beyond the average family’s capacity to accept.

Pet Obesity – Are We Killing Our Pets?

Sep 15, 2007 Author: staffwriter | Filed under: Pets

By Lauren Brehm

Obesity is a condition affecting the health of adult men and women. Statistics indicate that the severity of obesity has far more reaching implications than on basic fitness quality. This would be an alarming concern on its own, but research has proven that obesity also affects children. A survey has revealed that the rate of childhood obesity has grown rapidly in recent times with 4.2% of children between 6 and 11 years of age in 1963 to a staggering 17.5% in 2004. (CDC.gov.) In reflection, one might even determine that these statistics are not completely surprising given that children today are not performing the same physical activities as they were in the 1960s.

Teach Your Bird to Speak

Sep 15, 2007 Author: staffwriter | Filed under: Pets

By Trond Kristiansen

In the wild, birds learn language by listening to other voices that sound like their own. If you imitate the tone of your bird’s voice, you will increase the chance that the information is retained. So if you have a Parakeet or a Cockatiel then speak to the bird in a very high, squeaky voice.

If you have a Cockatoo, then it would be best to have a woman teach the birds words, since this type of bird has a smooth, female-like voice. Another great way to quickly teach your bird is to put it with other birds that speak. This is the most natural way for a bird to learn speech.

A parrot can learn the whole vocabulary of another bird in one month. If you don’t have a neighbor or friend with a bird that speaks, you can purchase CDs that replicate this phenomenon. The website called Parrotsite.com offers CDs with parrot voices that speak a wide variety of phrases. The phrases are repeated several times for a few minutes at random through out the day, just like a parrot would.
